Angelo Lonardo
Cleveland Underboss Was arrested in January 1983 at the age of 74 on charges of drug running. Fearful of spending his remaining life in jail, Lonardo turned and worked as a witness for the Cleveland FBI, exposing and detailing the inside workings of the national network of the La Cosa Nostra that originated from New York and The Commission, set up in the 1930s by New York mobster Charles Lucky Luciano. The Commission decided disputes among the various mob families, consisting of the heads of New York's five mafia families, divided profits and approved of major hits. Among those convicted in the testimony provided by Lonardo were: Vito Genovese Family Boss Fat Tony Salerno; Columbo Family Boss Carmine "The Stake" Persico; and Gaetano Lucchese Family Boss Tony "Ducks" Corallo for supervising the mafia's nationwide mob activities. All three were convicted and sentenced to 100 years imprisonment each. Also targeted in the crackdown was New York's Paul Castellano, but Castellano was murdered before charges could be made. |
