Former chief detective linked to $1 million jewelry heist Prosecutors may present evidence that Chicago's former chief of detectives took part in an armed robbery that netted $1 million in diamonds and jewelry, defense attorneys said Wednesday. The allegation is the latest to surface against William Hanhardt, a once-celebrated detective now awaiting sentencing as leader of a ring that took $5 million in a 10-year wave of jewel thefts starting in 1984. Hanhardt, 73, and his co-defendants have not been charged in connection with the robbery. But prosecutors may present it as evidence at his sentencing, which is scheduled for April 29. Hanhardt is being held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center after pleading guilty for his role heading the ring. Defense attorneys believe the alleged robbery, which they made public for the first time at Wednesday's hearing, never happened. They said police reports are skeptical about the victim's story. The attackers stole more than $1 million in loose diamonds, bracelets, necklaces, pendants, earrings and solitaire diamonds, it said. Neither the attackers nor the stolen property was ever found. The summary of the attack came from a civil lawsuit filed by Kashimallack's New York-based employer against the hotel. The case ended up in the appeals court. |
